Brass Door Handles: The Ultimate Buyer's Guide (Styles, Finishes & Installation Tips)

Atelier De Luxe

Why Brass Door Handles Are the Interior Designer's First Choice

Brass door handles are the single fastest way to elevate the interior of a home. A door handle is touched dozens of times a day — it is one of the most physically intimate details in any room — and choosing one in solid brass, whether polished, antique, or unlacquered, signals a level of care that is immediately felt, even if it is not immediately named. This guide covers everything you need to know to choose the right brass door handles for your home, from finish types and lever styles to installation tips and long-term care.

Types of Brass Door Handles

Lever Handles

Lever door handles are the most common interior door handle type and for good reason: they are ergonomic, accessible, and available in an enormous range of styles. A lever handle is operated by pressing down on a horizontal bar, making it ideal for all users including older residents and those with limited grip strength. In brass, lever handles range from the sleek and architectural — like the LUCCA Solid Brass Architectural Door Handle — to the ornate and classical, like the AURELIA French-Italian Solid Brass Interior Door Handle.

Door Knobs

Door knobs require a twisting grip rather than a downward press, which makes them slightly less accessible. They are, however, beautiful — and in brass they have a timeless quality that suits period properties, traditional interiors, and spaces where the architectural detail matters. The BESSEL Standard Doorknob Handle Set is a refined, classic option.

Cupboard Handles and Wardrobe Handles

For fitted cupboards, wardrobes, and bedroom furniture, the choice extends to bar pulls, cup pulls, and T-bar handles. These are not technically door handles (they are not operated with a latching mechanism) but they serve the same visual and functional role on cupboard and wardrobe doors. Browse our vintage wardrobe and cupboard pulls collection for traditional options, or our door handles collection for architectural levers and knobs.

Brass Door Handle Finishes

Polished Brass

Bright and reflective, polished brass door handles make a bold statement. They are lacquered to prevent tarnishing, so they require little maintenance beyond occasional wiping. They suit maximalist, glamorous, or period interiors — particularly Victorian and Edwardian homes where brass was the standard hardware choice.

Satin Brass

A brushed, low-sheen version of polished brass. Satin brass is warmer than chrome but less bold than polished brass, making it the go-to for transitional and contemporary interiors. It hides fingerprints better and feels more understated while still adding warmth.

Antique Brass

Antique brass door handles have a darkened, aged patina — warm but complex, with shadowing in the grooves and recesses. They are the natural choice for period properties and traditional interiors, and they age gracefully over time.

Unlacquered Brass

Unlacquered brass — known as living brass — has no protective coating, so it develops a natural patina with use. Over months and years it darkens in the areas touched most, creating a depth and richness that no manufactured finish can replicate. It is the choice of homeowners and designers who want hardware that is genuinely alive.

Solid Brass vs Brass-Plated Door Handles

What is the difference between solid brass and brass-plated door handles?

This is the most important question to ask when purchasing door handles and one that is not always clearly answered by retailers. Solid brass door handles are made entirely from brass alloy — dense, heavy, and durable. Brass-plated handles have a base of steel, zinc alloy (zamak), or aluminium with a thin layer of brass applied to the surface. The differences are significant:

  • Weight and feel: Solid brass is noticeably heavier and feels more substantial in the hand. Plated handles feel lighter and can feel hollow.
  • Durability: The plating on brass-plated handles will eventually wear through, particularly at high-contact points like the end of a lever. Once it wears, the base metal is exposed and cannot be repaired easily. Solid brass handles can be polished, cleaned, and will last decades.
  • Cost: Solid brass costs more upfront but represents far better long-term value. Plated handles may need replacing every 5–10 years.
  • Patina: Only solid brass can develop a genuine patina. Plated handles that tarnish are showing wear, not character.

At Atelier De Luxe, all our door handles and cabinet hardware are made from solid brass.

Interior vs Exterior Use

Can brass door handles be used outside?

Solid brass is naturally resistant to corrosion, which makes it technically suitable for exterior use. However, untreated or unlacquered brass will weather significantly when exposed to rain, UV, and temperature fluctuations — the patina will develop rapidly and unevenly. For exterior applications, look for handles that are specifically rated for outdoor use, often with a marine-grade lacquer or living finish designed to weather gracefully. Most of the handles in our door handles collection are designed and rated for interior use. For exterior doors, please contact us to discuss the most suitable options.

Care and Maintenance

How do you stop brass door handles from tarnishing?

For lacquered brass handles, tarnishing is not an issue under normal conditions — the lacquer protects the surface. Wipe with a soft, damp cloth and avoid abrasive cleaners. For unlacquered (living) brass, tarnishing is part of the product's character. If you prefer a brighter appearance, clean with a gentle brass polish or a homemade paste of lemon juice and bicarbonate of soda. Apply, leave for a minute, then rinse and dry thoroughly. Avoid dishwasher cleaning, bleach, or abrasive pads on any brass surface.

How to clean brass door handles — step by step

  1. Remove the handle from the door if possible (optional, but easier for thorough cleaning).
  2. Mix equal parts lemon juice and bicarbonate of soda (baking soda) to form a paste.
  3. Apply gently with a soft cloth in circular motions.
  4. Leave for 1–2 minutes.
  5. Rinse thoroughly with warm water.
  6. Dry immediately and completely with a clean, dry cloth — moisture left on brass will accelerate tarnishing.
  7. Optional: apply a thin coat of natural wax (beeswax or carnauba wax) to protect the surface.

Are unlacquered brass handles high maintenance?

High maintenance is relative. Unlacquered brass requires more attention than lacquered options — fingerprints are visible, and the patina develops actively. But many homeowners find that once they accept the living quality of unlacquered brass, maintenance becomes minimal: a wipe with a damp cloth keeps it clean, and the patina that forms is intentional and beautiful. If you need absolute consistency and the lowest possible maintenance, choose a lacquered satin or polished brass. If you want hardware with genuine character, unlacquered is worth the trade-off.

Installation Tips for Brass Door Handles

Most interior lever door handles come as a complete set: the lever, backplate or rose, spindle, and fixings. Installation is straightforward for most DIYers:

  • Ensure the existing latch or mortice lock is compatible with the spindle size (usually 8mm square).
  • Use the backplate as a template to mark fixings — do not rely on existing holes as positions vary between manufacturers.
  • Tighten screws firmly but not excessively — overtightening on solid brass backplates can strip the fixing.
  • For tubular latches, check the backset distance before ordering (50mm or 63mm are the most common standard sizes).
